A newly published study in Open Forum Infectious Diseases co-authored by several of ID Connect’s ID physicians in collaboration with colleagues at UPMC, demonstrates how daily telemedicine access to infectious diseases (ID) physicians can significantly improve patient care, particularly in community hospitals where ID expertise is limited.
Notably, even though patients managed through daily tele-ID services had higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) scores, outcomes were improved across key measures:
- Shorter length of stay
- Reduced likelihood of discharge on IV antibiotics
- Higher rates of oral (PO) antibiotics at discharge
These findings highlight the critical role tele-ID services can play in expanding access to expert infectious disease care and improving outcomes.
